The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
